Hsiao Ya-Hsin (b. 1982, Chiayi, Taiwan) is a visual artist working primarily with oil and acrylic painting. Her practice explores spatial depth and spiritual experience through layered brushstrokes and transparent color. By merging natural landscapes with internal memory, she creates a visual tension between fluidity and ascension, capturing the interplay between physical and metaphysical spaces.
Hsiao’s artistic journey is deeply influenced by her engagement with nature and her academic background in both fine art and theology. She graduated from the Department of Art Education at Hsinchu Teachers College in 2005 and earned a Master of Arts from the National Hsinchu University of Education in 2008. She later pursued doctoral studies at the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts and obtained a Master of Arts in Theological Studies from Tainan Theological College and Seminary in 2020. Her interdisciplinary approach allows her to explore themes of faith, perception, and transcendence within her visual language.
Hsiao has participated in international artist residencies, including the Vermont Studio Center (USA), Babayan Culture House (Turkey), and Can Serrat (Spain). These experiences have expanded her artistic practice beyond painting, incorporating landscape studies and site-specific installations.
Her paintings often feature overlapping layers of translucent hues and organic forms, disrupting conventional perspectives and constructing deep yet balanced spatial compositions. Recurring motifs, such as angel wings and celestial light, create a sense of weightlessness and ethereality. Through her exploration of movement, luminosity, and form, she investigates the intersection between materiality and spirituality, questioning how space, faith, and memory shape human perception.
Hsiao’s work has been exhibited in Taiwan and internationally, continuing to evolve as she delves deeper into the relationship between the natural world and metaphysical inquiry.
