Containing questions, recollections, and regrets of personal relationships, Fia Tharp’s artworks become reflecting pools of the past, present, and future. Inspired by the textile method of darning, their ribbon pieces grapple with material remains to try and repair, honor, or learn from intangible memories. Using the mass of river rocks to disrupt the weave itself, these “emotional planes” remind us of the ways we are changed and tethered by impressions of one another. Often incorporating lovers’ clothing items, bed sheets, or exchanged objects, each piece is imprinted with the unique energetic touch of bodies.

In the same vein, Tharp’s paintings act as notes for the artist on how to love “better” in a world where all intimacy is a constant process of trial and error.

Fia Tharp (b. 1999) graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 2021 with a BFA in Painting. Their work has most recently been shown at Minnesota Street Project, San Francisco, CA; Feia Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Side Bitch Project Space, San Gabriel, CA; Emeco House, Santa Monica, CA; and Woods-Gerry Gallery, Providence, RI.
