OPEN CALL
for WRITERS at CAN SERRAT

 

Can Serrat is opening a new residency call for visual and multidisciplinary artists from all backgrounds and nationalities. The residencies will take place during summer and autumn 2027 in El Bruc, at the foot of Montserrat and 45 km from Barcelona. Since 1989, it has hosted one of the oldest international residency programs for artistic and literary projects in Catalonia.

The program focuses on supporting and guiding the creative process through both individual and collective meetings, as well as fostering connections within an extensive professional cultural network. The house can accommodate up to 35 people from different countries and disciplines, allowing for a wealth of enriching exchanges.

Can Serrat receives support from the Government of Catalonia and is a member of Xarxaprod (the network of artistic production centers in Catalonia) and the TAV-CC.

Selection Criteria:

The selection process is not based on a formula or an automatic scoring system. Artistic judgment necessarily involves a subjective and situated dimension. The criteria function as reading tools, not as a checklist of requirements that projects must fulfill.

Taste
The jury reviews projects through its own singular aesthetic criteria, paying attention to their form, decisions, and construction.

Displacement
The jury pays attention to the difference a project produces, both within the artist’s/writer’s own practice and in relation to other artistic and literary practices.

SCHOLARSHIPS and IMPORTANT DATES

Residency Dates: August 2nd – December 12th, 2027

Application Period: September 1st to the 23rd, 2026

Invitations:

    • Full Grant for two months

    • Full Grant for one month

    • 30 Partial Grants

 

Benefits for all selected residents

  • Full access to all shared spaces: writing rooms, rehearsal spaces, a room with a projector, and a communal artists’ studio equipped with ceramic tools and an engraving press.
  • Participation in activities: orientation meeting, monthly display of the artists’ work to peers, and activities to stimulate creative processes. 
  • Unlimited monthly public transport pass
  • Visibility for your project and process through Can Serrat’s communication channels.
  • Publication in the digital project archive

*Can Serrat reserves the right to curate activities.

As every residency period is different, the activities and opportunities available may vary from month to month.

Some activities are open to all residents, while others have a limited number of places. In these cases, participation is determined by the Can Serrat team according to the activity, the guests, and the projects in residence.

 

SPECIFIC CONDITIONS OF THE GRANTS:

Two months Full Grant:
● Accommodation at Can Serrat (private room in August – September 2027).
● Meals: 2 prepared community dinners per week, access to a list of basic food supplies (coffee, tea, condiments, and some dry goods depending on availability).

 

One month Full Grant:
● Accommodation at Can Serrat (private room in October 2027).
● Meals: 2 prepared community dinners per week, access to a list of basic food supplies (coffee, tea, condiments, and some dry goods depending on availability).

 

Partial Grants:
Minimum residency duration: one month
● Option 1 Shared room: €1130/month (shared with up to 3 people)
● Option 2 Private room: €1745/month
● Option 3 Studio only (no accommodation or meals included): €305/month *
*Options 1 and 2 include 2 prepared community dinners, access to a list of basic food items (coffee, tea, condiments, and some dry goods, depending on availability).

 

 

JURY:

  • Karen Byk (Buenos Aires, 1993) holds a degree in History from UTDT and a Master’s in Social and Economic Communication from UdK. She has published the poetry collections Hice una fiesta y ahora quiero echarlos (Valparaíso Ediciones, 2024) and Tocarle los huesos al bosque (Siesta Verlag, 2022), as well as fanzines and contributions to literary anthologies and magazines, with translations into English and German. As a translator, she published Flores de Vidrio (Milena Caserola, 2024), a collection of poems by Debora Vogel, and received a full grant from Can Serrat Residency to complete in 2025 her translation of A Responsibility to Awe, a collection of poems by Rebecca Elson.

HOW TO APPLY?

Tips for submitting your application:

  • Use simple and clear sentences to explain your proposal.

  • Avoid automated art speak and the use of “-isms.”

  • Although nature and rurality are important themes for the residency, bear in mind that Can Serrat receives many applications that explore these concepts. Therefore, we are especially interested in understanding what new or original perspective your proposal brings regarding these topics.

  • Research Can Serrat and its surroundings to better contextualize your project.

 

Application Procedure and Required Documents

  • Fill out the APPLICATION FORM with your details.

  • You will also be asked to provide a .PDF file titled: “lastname_firstname_Escritura_SA2027Call”.

This document should include:

    • A video* (3 min max) or text excerpts* to present and talk about your work and practice.
    • Website link (if applicable).

The application may be in Catalan, Spanish, or English. We cannot accept other languages at this time.

From Can Serrat, we would like to accompany and recognize some of the processes developed during the 2027 residencies by offering a Production Grant and Retorns Grants to support the continuity of the work initiated during the residency.

Retorns Grants — Visual Arts and Writing
Return grant to come back to Can Serrat for an additional one-month residency during the following year.

Granted in December 2027 among residents from the Spring, Summer, and Autumn residencies. The selection will be made by the Can Serrat team in dialogue with the invited professional leading the studio visits.
