Zetterquist Lars Johan

Conceptual artist Johan Zetterquist creates proposals and designs for public space whose realization remains one step removed from reality. His ambitious, absurdist ideas take shape as texts, drawings, photographs, models, performances, sound works, and large-scale installations and sculptures both inside and outside the gallery.

His subjects often unfold within the urban context and challenge our understanding of the boundary between “nature” and the man-made. Zetterquist’s surreal humor generates unconventional visions: a permanently burning house on the edge of a highway, skyscrapers half-buried in sand, a “monument” that is, in fact, a garden fence. His works rebel against societal rules and the orderly voice of public announcements, rejecting conformity and celebrating hypothetical realities.

Johan Zetterquist is an artist-in-residence at Can Serrat from September to November 2025.
