Morgane Larousserie is a french artist graduated from EESI (European Higher School of the Image) and a roller derby player.
They choose to adopt a mainly documentary approach in their work, anchored in reality. By adopting this position, they detach themself from the subjects they deal with and try to give a voice back to the people concerned. Their point of view emerges through the writing and editing in the short films they have made.
The themes they explore revolve around feminist issues, particularly patriarchal and gendered violence. They initially focused on domestic violence and the way in which it can be portrayed and shown to the viewer without being illustrated. Then, how to escape violence? Their diploma is an attempt to defend the practice of gender non-mixity and self-advocacy, using the example of the roller derby club where they play as one possible solution.
Today, they are reflecting on the question of grief after recently losing a teammate to femicide. They are trying to think about this process, which is often long and difficult. Does it really come to an end? How can we think about the political dimension of grieving? More broadly, what spaces for care and healing exist when you’re a woman or a queer person?
Ayala will be in residence at Can Serrat from May to June 2025.
