Teresa Gubern was born on June 3rd in Valsequillo de Gran Canaria. In this place, the sun sets early behind the rocks, where winter paints everything green and summer turns it orange and ochre with dried tabaibas, agaves, and cardons.
She left early and has been wandering the world ever since, until the longing for home became stronger than her travels. Studying Science and Liberal Arts with a specialization in Land, Energy, and Sustainability in the Netherlands deeply influences her poetry. She also holds a master’s degree in ICT solutions for the environment and well-being and is currently pursuing a master’s in Gender Studies. She works in project management for development, environmental, feminist, and social initiatives.
She is part of the Jóvenes en la Isla project at the Museo Canario, appears in the II & III Anthology of the National Prize for Living Poetry and Liberoamericanas: 140 Contemporary Poets, and has participated in several Poetry Slams and publications such as Luminaria, En Plan Culto, Liberoamérica, Arrebol Fanzine, Culturamanía, among others. Her first poetry collection was published in April 2024, just as her homeland cried out: “Canarias tiene un límite”.
She dreams of greener, more sustainable islands, free from excessive tourism. She does not imagine a paradise for tourists but a place where the land and heritage are protected, where a ray of sunshine is not sold at the expense of everything else.
Teresa will be in residence at Can Serrat during January-February 2025.
