Paul Cupido

The photographic work of Paul Cupido (b. 1972, the Netherlands) revolves around the principle of mu: a philosophical concept that could be translated as ‘does not have’, but is equally open to countless interpretations. Mu can be considered a void, albeit one that holds potential.

Cupido’s ongoing photographic and cinematic experiment ‘Searching for Mu’ is at once a personal and universal odyssey of our fleeting existence in relation to the profound emotional experiences of love, time, and death. Instead of presuming to be documented, his photographs point to transcendent reflections of the soul and of the intermingling of the microscopic and macroscopic.

Paul Cupido graduated cum laude from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam in 2017 with the first installment of his ongoing project Searching for Mu, including an artist’s book, photography, and film. Cupido won the Hariban Jurors Choice Award in 2017. He was featured in New Dutch Photography Talent 2018 and GUP Magazine issue 57. In summer 2018, Cupido continued working on Searching for Mu in residency in the Brazilian Amazon. Gallery Bildhalle (Zürich) will open Cupido’s first solo exhibition in May 2019. Paul Cupido lives and works in Amsterdam.
