Jillian McManemin

Jillian McManemin is a performance artist, filmmaker and writer. She has performed and presented work at Anthology Film Archives, the MET Live Arts, Dixon Place, the CUE Foundation, Invisible Exports and the Knockdown Center. She has performed with Ieva Misevičiūtė, Clifford Owens, and stars in the independent feature, The Cruel Tale of the Medicine Man. The film features a number of downtown burlesque luminaries and won best feature at the Coney Island Film Festival in 2015 and the East Village Queer Film Festival in 2017. These works and performances have been featured in the New York Times, Art21, Materials for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation.  

She has produced, edited and contributed to books by Dread Scott, Larry Clark, the Living Theater, Boo Hooray Press, Critical Practices Inc. and many others. She acts as a visiting critic for Pratt Institute and has lectured at the Minerva Art Academy in the Netherlands. She has received the American PEN Writer’s Fund, the Max’s Kansas City Grant and the Artist Alliance Grant. She was a resident writer at the Vermont Studio Center. She has been published in Hyperallergic, Your Impossible Voice and Art511 Magazine.

She recently co-directed a collaborative experimental feature-length film, Confederitis. The film premiered at The Slipper Room and will screen at Anthology Film Archives in June. The film is being translated into Spanish and an excerpt appeared at the Centro Provincial de Artes Plásticas y Diseño en Santiago, Cuba.
