Melody’s current field of research investigates the suppression of painful emotions and where they are stored in the body when not processed or released through therapeutic practices. Normalising the existence of these difficult emotions by drawing parallels with the natural world allows them to be seen for what they are: natural, organic, and universal.

The anthology she is developing will follow a discernible sequence and structure, though the stories themselves will be episodic. Each can be read as a stand-alone narrative, encapsulating the essence of a specific emotion she intends to recreate and explore.

As a writer, Marshall spends a lot of time in nature, cultivating stillness in meditative environments conducive to creativity. She creates time for research and deep reflection before allowing the creative process to take shape. This process is particularly relevant to the nature of this specific project, which includes descriptions of natural objects such as trees, clay, seeds, mould, silk, grass, moonlight, algae, and wheat.

She is an observational writer who combines clear, direct prose with moments of magical realism. Stylistically, her writing gravitates towards expression that mirrors the register and cadence of her mother tongue—Farsi—in terms of its lyricism, but also subtext, vivid descriptions, and symbolism.

Melody will be in residence in May and June 2026.
