Hsiao Ya-hsin’s creative form is flat painting, and the media mainly uses oil paint and acrylic. The artist is interested in the spatial dimension, natural environment, and the spatial view of the Christian religion. Most of the paintings are based on her own religious experience and the natural scenery recorded during her travels and are composed of fragments of scenery remembered in mind.
Hsiao Ya-hsin use layers and layers of brushstrokes to manage the space, and she use a lot of linseed oil mixed with zinc white, titanium white, and transparent pigments to manage the sense of space in the painting. Although the composition of this space, which seems to be created by oil and brushstrokes, does not use the rule of one-point perspective, the painting shows a vague sense of distance with spatial depth. These brushstrokes stacked with oil deeply fascinated me and inspired me to explore the painting space. The symbols of the paintings are mainly taken from the organic lines of the angel’s wings in the early days of the paintings, trying to create a translucent and light state to present the sense of flow and rising space in the paintings.
Hsiao Ya-hsin will take her residency in Can Serrat in November 2024.
